ELEVEN

Justin tapped his leg, waiting on the porch for his driver to show up. Saturday morning was the day Justin met for men’s fellowship with his brieder, Sammy, and some of the other guys in the two neighboring communities. Although he was looking forward to it, he was nervous.

Today, he’d divulge his plans to marry Lucy. The news was certain to be met with hesitancy and possibly discouragement from some, but he’d already mentally prepared himself. Having Sammy on his side was a great comfort.

Last time he’d spoken with Lucy’s father, he’d said the leaders would stop by Justin’s home tonight. Which meant he’d probably receive a reprimand and be assigned a wedding date. To say he was anxious would be an understatement.

After spending the last few days and a night with Lucy, he was ready to begin the rest of his life with her.

They’d shared so many things; their favorite colors—they both shared a love of green; their favorite foods—his was barbequed ribs and hers was spaghetti; their favorite animals—he liked horses and she liked squirrels. Squirrels! Of all things. He hadn’t told her that he used to hunt them with his brieder.

They both enjoyed all kinds of games, and the two of them assembled a puzzle the day she’d spent all night at his place. They discussed favorite Bible verses and songs—just about anything they could think of. He truly felt they had formed a solid friendship, if not more.

And their first kiss? Ach, their first kiss had been amazing. He could recall it vividly.

Lucy had been in his kitchen, rustling up ingredients to prepare supper for the two of them, when he’d walked in with a wrapped box.

“What is that?” Lucy’s smile could’ve hung the moon.

He’d shrugged. “A little something I picked up for you. Open it.” He urged.

She pulled the ribbon off, then tore the wrapping paper, her smile not leaving her face. When she opened the box and pulled out the gift, she giggled at the “Kiss the cook” message on the apron he’d chosen. It had been absolutely perfect.

“Should I help you put it on?” He offered.

She nodded.

He took his time tying the strings behind her neck and around her waist, lingering on purpose. Then he stepped back. “There you go.”

“I love it.”

“Me too.”

She stared at him, fighting a smile. “Well?”

He took a step closer. “Well, what?” he murmured, leaning close to her ear. He loved teasing her.

Instead of waiting for him, she’d hooked her fingers around one of his suspenders, wrapped her other hand around his neck, and brought his lips down on hers. From there, he took over and pulled her into his arms. His mouth blissfully moved over hers, then momentarily left to explore her delicate jawline and neck. His hands ached to explore as well, but he forbade them to do so. His lips returned to hers and he deepened the kiss. Her heart beating against his chest sparked a desire that coursed through his entire being. When he could hardly stand it, he forced himself back.
